ETH Fees May Soon Become Less of a Barrier for Stablecoin Holders
Ethereum developers have made significant progress in addressing the issue of wallets holding stablecoins but being unable to move them due to Ethereum's transaction fee requirements. The proposed fix, Frame Transactions (EIP-8141), has been scheduled for inclusion in the 2027 Hegotá upgrade.
Currently, wallets can hold stablecoins but cannot transfer them without sufficient ETH to cover the fees. Frame Transactions aim to separate authorization, fee payment, and execution, allowing users to transact without having to acquire ETH directly.
The proposal has been designed by a team of ten authors, including Vitalik Buterin, who highlighted the updated EIP text. The frames will break down transactions into separate components, one for user authorization, another for fee payments, and subsequent frames for execution.
While Frame Transactions do not remove ETH from the system, they change how the fee payer is arranged. An application or another account would still need to handle the ETH payment in sponsored transactions.
