Ethereum Achieves First Atomic L1-to-L2 Transaction Under EEZ Framework

Ethereum has successfully executed its first atomic transaction linking the mainnet with a layer-2 network under the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) framework. The test, which involved 0.001 ETH, demonstrated synchronous composability, allowing state changes to occur across both execution layers in a single transaction. This means that actions involving Ethereum and an EEZ rollup can either complete together or revert together, eliminating the risk of partial failures.

The EEZ framework, developed by Gnosis and Zisk with funding from the Ethereum Foundation, aims to reduce fragmented liquidity across rollups. It enables smart contracts on connected rollups to call Ethereum contracts within one transaction without requiring separate bridge infrastructure. The project's first mainnet example of this technology was highlighted by EEZ contributor Eduardo Antuña Díez on October 5, 2026.

Despite this milestone, the framework remains under development. The core-protocol repository labels the software as an "early-stage implementation" and notes that it has not yet been audited. Interfaces and storage layouts are still subject to change, and the system uses off-chain state computation followed by on-chain verification to enable atomic calls within one L1 block.

Gnosis Chain is expected to become one of the first major EEZ rollups, with a target launch around December 2026 or January 2027. The transition will involve turning Gnosis Chain from a standalone L1 into an EEZ rollup that settles on Ethereum, maintaining existing addresses, balances, and application states. The full EEZ specification, including bidirectional composability and real-time zero-knowledge proving, is currently expected to develop through 2027.
