Ethereum and Base Abandon Joint Account Abstraction Efforts

The Ethereum and Base developer teams have abandoned their joint efforts to create a unified account abstraction design due to disagreements over scalability, security, and other network priorities.

Ethereum's EIP-8141 proposal focuses on censorship-resistant Layer 1, while Base's EIP-8130 targets high-throughput Layer 2 customization. The split will likely increase integration complexity for wallets and may prompt broader coordination or abstraction layers across the Ethereum ecosystem.

The teams explored several technical solutions but ultimately decided that interoperability was secondary to each network's core goals. Ethereum wants account abstraction to support a highly decentralized network, while Base needs it to operate at large scale with clearer rules around supported accounts and transactions.

Ethereum's EIP-8141 proposal would make account abstraction a native part of the network, allowing users to pay transaction fees through alternative methods without relying on centralized relayers. In contrast, Base's EIP-8130 introduces a new transaction type and an onchain keystore for custom authentication and gas sponsorship.
