Ethereum and Base Abandon Joint Wallet Standard Efforts
Ethereum and Coinbase-backed Base have abandoned their efforts to create a shared standard for next-generation crypto wallets. The two blockchain networks had spent months discussing how to make crypto wallets more user-friendly, but ultimately decided that compromising on their respective priorities would be too costly.
The proposed standards, EIP-8141 (Ethereum's) and EIP-8130 (Base's), aimed to simplify wallet interactions by allowing users to log in with passkeys, recover accounts in different ways, and bundle blockchain actions into a single transaction. However, the differences in their priorities led to an impasse.
Ethereum prioritized preserving privacy, censorship resistance, and security as wallets became more programmable, while Base focused on flexibility for high-volume applications and compliance needs. As a result, developers designing cross-network wallets may need to support both standards.
