Ethereum Blobs: Temporary Storage for Scalable Data Availability
Ethereum nodes have a retention period of approximately 18 days for blob data. After this period, they can prune the actual contents of the blobs.
This temporary design was introduced with EIP-4844 to make Ethereum Layer 2 data availability cheaper and more scalable.
Blobs are used by layer 2 rollups to publish large amounts of transaction data without putting it into traditional calldata, which is intended to become permanent blockchain history.
