Ethereum Client Diversity Picture Fractures Under Incompatible Estimates
Ethereum's client diversity picture has become fragmented due to incompatible estimates from different sources. A snapshot taken on September 16 revealed that three clients - Teku, Lighthouse, and another - were estimated to have the largest share by different methods.
The estimates came from Blockprint, Miga Labs, and Rated, but they contradicted each other, with some showing Teku at a significant lead. This discrepancy has raised concerns about the accuracy of client diversity metrics, which are crucial for Ethereum's safety features.
Ethereum researchers are exploring stronger validator privacy measures to address these issues. The Lean-chain research proposal suggests using zero-knowledge proofs to rebuild the active validator registry daily and hide links between deposits, withdrawals, and validator activity. This would make it harder to measure operator and stake concentration.
