Ethereum Client Diversity Picture Fractures Under Incompatible Estimates
Ethereum's client diversity picture has fractured due to incompatible estimates, posing a risk to the network's safety features. This is because Ethereum validators rely on independently built consensus clients to agree on the chain, and diversity is a crucial aspect of this process.
According to a Sept. 16 snapshot from Clientdiversity.org, three different estimates were provided for the largest client share: Blockprint estimated Teku at 99.83%, Miga Labs estimated Lighthouse at 51.32%, and Rated estimated Teku at 53.86%. These readings come from different proxies and one is attached to a tool its developer now considers defunct.
The central question is whether Ethereum can replace imperfect surveillance with authenticated aggregate reporting before these persistent identifiers disappear.
