Ethereum Foundation Sets Aggressive Quantum Resistance Deadline
The Ethereum Foundation has set a firm deadline for making the network quantum-resistant by December 2029. This target aligns with migration timelines independently set by Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft.
According to the Protocol cluster's scoring of 62 proposals for Hegotá, the hard fork after Glamsterdam, the Foundation has committed to prioritizing quantum resistance across execution, consensus, and data layers.
The Foundation acknowledges that planning for Q-day in 2030 is a deliberately aggressive assumption. To achieve this goal, they are treating the deadline as non-negotiable until January 2027, when outside experts will help reassess quantum progress.
Currently, roughly 65% of ETH already sits in quantum-vulnerable addresses, according to Project Eleven. The Foundation framed Hegotá as the fork that decides whether the later post-quantum forks ship on time, requiring an average of 7.2 months per fork, a pace they call aggressive.
Frame Transactions carries the load for execution-layer items, opening a path to new signature schemes without a hard fork for each one. However, components of the consensus layer get the opposite treatment due to their inability to swap cryptography without a fork.
