Ethereum Institutional Backs Quick Slots Initiative to Reduce Block Times
Ethereum Institutional has thrown its weight behind Ethlabs' proposal to reduce block times on the network from 12 seconds to 10 seconds. The initiative, known as 'Quick Slots,' aims to speed up the Ethereum network and sustain the growing demand generated by institutional activity.
The proposal, EIP-8198, was drafted in March and has been gaining traction among developers. Ethlabs published an article last Thursday backed by 20 DeFi protocol founders who expressed strong support for the measure.
Ethereum Institutional emphasized that reducing block times is necessary to keep pace with other networks, such as Solana, which reduced its slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 ms in August. The nonprofit organization also noted that Zcash holders recently backed a reduction in the target block time from 75 to 25 seconds.
The Hegotá upgrade, scheduled for implementation in late 2026 following the Glamsterdam update, may include EIP-8198. Developers could begin implementing the upgrade toward late 2026, once Glamsterdam is completed.
