Ethereum Introduces Temporary Data Containers for Layer 2 Rollups
Ethereum's transaction data has two main components: calldata and blobs. Calldata is used to carry data that is permanent, read-only, and available for smart contracts to access during execution.
Blobs, on the other hand, are temporary data containers introduced by EIP-4844. They were designed primarily to help Layer 2 rollups publish large amounts of transaction data to Ethereum more efficiently.
The main difference between calldata and blobs is their persistence. Calldata is stored permanently as part of Ethereum's transaction history, while blob data is retained for a limited time before being pruned from the node's memory.
