Ethereum Layer 2 Network Blast Shuts Down Amid Financial Woes
Blast, an Ethereum layer 2 network that once held over $2.3 billion in deposits, is shutting down due to financial difficulties. The chain can no longer cover its costs, despite having earned only $110 in revenue over the past 24 hours.
The decision to shut down was announced on October 2 by Blast's team, which stated that there is no viable path for the network to return to profitability. Users have until October 26 to withdraw their funds through the standard interface, after which they will need to interact directly with the chain's bridge contracts on Ethereum mainnet.
The shutdown marks a significant decline from Blast's peak in February 2024, when it held nearly $2.27 billion in total value locked (TVL). The BLAST token has also plummeted, dropping by over 98% since its launch in June 2024.
This development is not an isolated incident, as many other Ethereum layer 2 networks have struggled to survive due to their reliance on farming incentives. Research suggests that only a handful of top networks, such as Base and Arbitrum, are likely to survive the next year due to their real-world applications and transaction volume.
