Ethereum Locks Down $49.5B in Stablecoin Dominance

The $72 billion USDC stablecoin market has seen Ethereum dominate the issuance of this asset, holding around 70% of the total supply. According to recent data, approximately 68.8% of USDC is issued natively on Ethereum, with Solana hosting around $7 billion in USDC. This dominance can be attributed to the years of accumulated liquidity in lending protocols, decentralized exchanges, and yield strategies within Ethereum's DeFi ecosystem.

The growth of USDC has been significant over the past year, with its total supply increasing from $60 billion to over $72 billion today. This increase is driven by institutional adoption and the expansion of DeFi protocols relying on dollar-denominated liquidity. Circle first launched USDC on Ethereum in September 2018.

The Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP), rolled out starting in 2023, has accelerated the multi-chain expansion of USDC. CCTP burns tokens on the source chain and mints fresh, native USDC on the destination chain, ensuring direct backing by Circle's reserves without fragmentation or smart contract risk.
