Ethereum Node Operators Risk Slashing Penalties Through Operational Mistakes
Node operators who manage Ethereum validators are at risk of triggering slashing penalties due to operational mistakes. The most common errors occur when moving validators between machines or clusters during maintenance, which can lead to duplicate keys and conflicting messages.
Misconfigurations also contribute to slashing risks, particularly when disabling anti-slashing databases or incorrectly configuring remote signers for improved performance. Additionally, bugs in validator clients can force operators to re-import keys and sign slashable messages.
Slashing penalties scale with the size of the stake, making it a significant concern for growing operators who manage more complex configurations and add multiple Auxiliary Validator Sets (AVSs).
The exit queue creates delays when massive exit requests enter the system, as seen in September 2022 when an infrastructure provider's exit request caused a 46-day delay for many subsequent exit requests. The queue length can reach up to 2.65 million ETH.
