Ethereum on Brink of Radical Shift with Hegotá Upgrade
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has warned that the upcoming Hegotá upgrade may be the last standard fork for the network.
In a recent post, Buterin noted that Hegotá, planned for 2027, will likely be the final upgrade that developers from the 2015 era can still understand and work with.
According to Buterin, Ethereum's evolution is shifting towards 'cryptographic world computer' designs that verify results rather than re-executing everything.
This change is driven by a desire to move beyond the traditional blockchain model, where nodes simply download data and re-execute transactions. Instead, the network will combine blockchains with cryptographic verification and privacy-preserving mechanisms, alongside decentralized offchain components.
