Ethereum Shifts Toward Hybrid System With Hegota Upgrade

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined the network's future plans following its next major upgrade, known as Hegota. The upgrade will mark a significant shift away from the traditional blockchain model and toward a hybrid system built on advanced cryptography.

Buterin described the current Ethereum (ETH) as moving away from its original design and toward a fundamentally different kind of system. This new design combines original blockchain concepts with cryptographic tools that were not mature when Bitcoin (BTC) launched.

The Hegota fork is expected before the end of 2026, after which everything planned for Ethereum will involve a more significant change, according to Buterin. He listed several key pieces of this next phase, including recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, more efficient consensus algorithms, and quantum-safe cryptography.

Buterin also discussed how the network's decentralized structure affects performance, stating that decentralization can now improve performance in some cases by enabling larger volumes of data to be stored in parallel and processed more computation at once inside the mempool.
