Ethereum Staking Surge Driven by MetaMask Withdrawals
The Ethereum staking system has seen a sudden surge in withdrawals, with the backlog of exiting validators jumping from 166,000 ETH on September 29 to 851,000 ETH by October 2. As of Monday, around 786,000 ETH remained queued, suggesting a nearly two-week wait for exits. At first glance, this could indicate significant selling pressure, as ETH trades around $2,700.
The increase was primarily driven by MetaMask, which withdrew validators as a precaution following a security incident. An estimated 17,000 validators, controlling roughly 523,000 ETH, were involved. However, MetaMask reported no evidence of wallet or customer fund compromises. These withdrawals may not signal investor sell-offs, as the affected ETH is expected to be gradually restaked over 45 days.
Meanwhile, the queue for ETH entering staking is even larger. Around 1.5 million ETH, worth roughly $4 billion, awaited staking on Monday, with a 25-day wait. This imbalance supports the argument of a broader supply squeeze, as large amounts of ETH remain committed to staking while exchange reserves have also fallen.
Despite the staking data, Ethereum still faces an immediate technical hurdle. ETH has repeatedly struggled around the $2,800 level, making it the key breakout point before another attempt at $3,000. Coinpaper identifies $2,775-$2,825 as the main resistance zone. Citi recently raised its 12-month Ethereum target to $3,028, up from $2,240, citing stronger crypto activity and institutional participation.
