Ethereum Staking System Grinds to a Halt with $5 Billion Backlog
Ethereum's staking system is facing a major traffic jam, with over 2 million ETH waiting to enter the network. This backlog has been growing steadily, with an estimated wait time of around 35 days and 18 hours for new deposits to be activated.
The problem arises from the fact that more than 42 million ETH, or nearly 35% of Ethereum's total supply, is already staked. The network's validator activation queue has reached a record high, with 2.059 million ETH waiting to enter at the time of writing.
This imbalance creates a cost for participants, as ETH waiting to be activated does not yet earn consensus rewards. At current staking rates, the backlog represents around $348,000 to $366,000 in potential daily rewards, based on an ETH price of around $2,466.
Ethereum's proof-of-stake system is designed to limit the rate at which new stakes can enter and leave the network. The current cap is 256 ETH per epoch, with each epoch lasting around 6.4 minutes. This means that the network can process a maximum of around 57,600 ETH per day through its validator churn mechanism.
The Electra consensus rules also allow compounding validators to hold an effective balance of up to 2,048 ETH while retaining the minimum of 32 ETH required for validation.
