Ethereum Staking's Hidden Owners
In the world of Ethereum staking, a crucial question is often overlooked: once you stake your ETH, who actually owns it?
The answer lies in the underlying logic of staking, which splits permissions into two distinct halves: the Signing Key and the Withdrawal Credentials.
While validators rely on the former for participating in consensus, the latter dictates control over withdrawals. This key can sit quietly in a cold wallet or seed phrase, never needing to connect to the internet.
Ethereum's official positioning is clear: the validation signature Key is 'hot' and requires staying online, while Withdrawal Credentials represent a 'cold' permission at the level of fund ownership.
This means that even if a node service provider handles the Signing Key, it cannot arbitrarily transfer staked assets to its own account. The user retains control over funds in a true non-custodial architecture.
