Ethereum Targets December 2029 for Post-Quantum L1 Readiness
The Ethereum Foundation's Protocol cluster has set a target of December 2029 for post-quantum readiness across Ethereum's Layer 1 (L1). This means that by then, Ethereum will be resistant to quantum attacks across its execution, consensus, and data layers.
As part of this plan, the Protocol cluster is working on a minimum viable post-quantum milestone as a temporary safeguard before full quantum resistance is achieved. This will allow Ethereum to begin moving towards quantum-resistant infrastructure before every component of the network has been upgraded.
The roadmap also includes work on other areas such as fast finality, privacy, state, and zkEVM. The team is currently planning around the possibility of 'Q-day' arriving as early as 2030, describing this assumption as deliberately aggressive.
