Ethereum to Evolve into Cryptographic World Computer by 2030
Ethereum's future is taking shape as described by co-founder Vitalik Buterin. The network could become fundamentally different from its current blockchain model, evolving into a 'cryptographic world computer' centered around zero-knowledge proofs and decentralized computation.
Buterin outlined his vision for Ethereum's architecture through 2030 in a recent post titled 'The Cryptographic World Computer.' He expects the network to increasingly rely on SNARK verification and data availability sampling, allowing participants to verify computations without independently executing them.
This shift would help alleviate node requirements, making it easier for diverse communities to contribute to network security. Buterin also mentioned that Ethereum is working toward quantum resistance, with a goal of securing its execution, consensus, and data layers by December 2029.
The upgrade Hegotá, planned for 2027, marks a potential dividing line between the current architecture and the longer-term cryptographic design. Future upgrades will focus on recursive STARKs, formal verification, optimized consensus, and quantum-resistant cryptography.
