The current process of verifying transactions on Ethereum involves repeated calculations by participants, which can be time-consuming and inefficient. However, Buterin proposes replacing this process with cryptographic proofs that confirm work was done correctly, reducing the need for unnecessary computations.

This change would allow developers to break down complex applications into smaller tasks, which could be processed more efficiently and cost-effectively. The Hegota upgrade, planned for 2027, is likely Ethereum's last 'normal' fork, after which advanced cryptographic tools and formal verification will take center stage.
