Ethereum's Future Focus: Cryptographic Proofs Over Hard Forks
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has hinted that future network upgrades will focus on cryptographic proofs, rather than traditional hard forks. According to Buterin, the upcoming Hegota protocol upgrade in 2027 will likely be the last 'normal' fork for Ethereum.
This shift away from hard forks is significant because it reframes how Ethereum scales its capacity. Currently, every node on the network must repeat calculations to confirm transactions, which can limit the network's growth. Buterin proposes using zero-knowledge proofs to reduce this computational burden and increase scalability.
The proposed solution would allow nodes to process transactions and generate a short mathematical proof that they followed the rules. Other nodes could then verify these proofs quickly, without having to repeat the underlying calculations.
