Ethereum's Hegota Upgrade Delayed by Withdrawn Validator Reward Burn Proposal
Ethereum's upcoming Hegota upgrade has been delayed due to the withdrawal of a proposal that would have burned part of validator rewards. The 'Tapered Issuance Burn' plan, introduced by Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake and others, aimed to increase the share of rewards burned as more ETH was staked.
The proposal drew both support and criticism from industry participants, with some calling it harmful to DeFi and Ethereum's security. Joseph Chalom, Chief Executive Officer of SharpLink, said EIP-8363 would 'weaken DeFi', while Aave founder Stani Kulechov criticized it as 'harmful to Ethereum.'
With the proposal withdrawn from Hegota review, the debate over issuance policy will continue through a separate process. A timeline has been outlined for discussions on this topic, with an issuance policy forum planned for Devcon in November, followed by workshops and consensus among core developers at EthCC in April 2027.
