Ethereum's Next-Gen Vision: A 'Cryptographic World Computer'

Vitalik Buterin has laid out his vision for Ethereum's future, calling it a 'cryptographic world computer' that combines blockchain consensus with advanced cryptographic tools and decentralized off-chain computation.

The network will undergo significant changes over the next decade, with tunable computation scale, dramatically lower node operating demands, and privacy baked into the protocol rather than bolted on top.

Buterin believes that by 2030, Ethereum will look almost nothing like the system he first sketched out in the early 2010s, with the integration of zero-knowledge proof systems, such as SNARKs and STARKs, at its core.

The Hegota fork, planned for 2027, is expected to be a major milestone in Ethereum's evolution, marking the last upgrade that would be recognizable to someone familiar with the network circa 2015. After this, Buterin expects the network to shift toward deeper integrations of recursive STARKs and formal verification processes.
