Ethereum's Next Scaling Leap: Decentralization Becomes a Performance Strength
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined the potential for future scaling on Ethereum through advanced cryptography and distributed computing. This approach, he says, could turn decentralization from a performance burden into a scaling advantage for the network.
Buterin describes Ethereum's long-term destination as a 'cryptographic world computer,' where computation and data can be distributed across different participants while compact proofs allow others to verify work correctly without repeating it. This shift would mark a departure from traditional blockchain models, in which every node downloads transactions and repeats much of the same computation.
One of Ethereum's earliest ambitions was to distribute different pieces of computation across participants, but the obstacle was establishing that each participant had performed their portion correctly. Modern cryptographic proofs are increasingly providing this missing layer, Buterin says.
