Ethereum's Quick Slots Proposal: Faster Blocks Without Sacrificing Decentralization
Ethereum's EIP-8198, also known as Quick Slots, has been proposed to speed up block production on the mainnet while preserving decentralization and credible neutrality. The proposal aims to reduce block time from 12 seconds to 10 seconds, with subsequent reductions requiring separate testing and consensus.
The goal is not to make Ethereum the fastest trading venue but to provide a secure and decentralized layer for settlement. Faster blocks can improve market efficiency by reducing waiting times, allowing on-chain markets to update more frequently, and enabling better fills for users.
DeFi founders and application developers believe that faster slots will improve user experience, increase LP returns, and make capital markets more efficient. Tokenized stocks and ETFs also benefit from shorter blocks as quote providers bear less risk, and spreads have room to tighten.
While some parties have different views on the priority of EIP-8198, many agree that faster blocks can concentrate liquidity on L1, making privacy sets larger, and compliance tools get more reaction opportunities in critical windows.
