Ethereum's Recent Surge Fails to Bridge Gap with Bitcoin
Ethereum's recent surge has investors wondering if the 'flippening' trade is back on. Over the past 90 days, Ethereum has risen by 72% while Bitcoin has increased by 42%. This trend also holds over a 60-day window with Ethereum up 42% versus Bitcoin's 32%. However, this significant gap still doesn't mean the flippening will happen anytime soon.
The flippening refers to the moment when Ethereum's total market value surpasses Bitcoin's. Currently, Ethereum is trading at $2,708 while Bitcoin sits at $84,883. To achieve the flippening, Ethereum needs to grow about 5.1 times relative to Bitcoin, which is a significant challenge.
Ethereum's recent quarter of outperformance was mainly due to its price drop being deeper than Bitcoin's in July. On July 1, Ethereum hit a low of $1,551, down 69% from its peak of $4,956 in August 2025, while Bitcoin fell to $57,718 at the same time, down 54% from its October 2025 all-time high.
Despite Ethereum's recent gains, it still lags behind Bitcoin on longer timeframes. Over the past twelve months, Ethereum has dropped 33%, while Bitcoin has fallen only 23%. For the year 2026, Ethereum is down 9.3% compared to Bitcoin's 3.7%.
