Ethereum's Staking Yield Burn Proposal Sparks Opposition from Aave and ether.fi Founders

A proposal to burn a rising share of Ethereum validator rewards has sparked opposition from Aave and ether.fi founders, along with other DeFi leaders and solo stakers. The proposal, renumbered EIP-8363, would remove the incentive to stake beyond half of all ETH by burning a fraction of validator rewards that climbs with the staking ratio, reaching 100% at a saturation balance of 60.25 million ETH.

Aave founder Stani Kulechov and ether.fi chief executive Mike Silagadze have come out against the proposal, citing concerns about its impact on solo stakers and the overall Ethereum ecosystem. In a post on X, Kulechov argued that the mechanism would produce the opposite of its stated goal, accelerating the capture of ETH by large entities rather than deterring it.

Silagadze also spoke out against the proposal, calling it 'disappointing on every level' and arguing that it would push out solo stakers who are not subsidized by the Ethereum Foundation. He claimed that the change would leave staking to large centralized entities with zero cost of capital, forcing a capital exodus at seven of the top 10 DeFi protocols.

Other opponents include portfolio tracker rotki founder Lefteris Karapetsas, who noted that 'issuance ain't it' and that Ethereum has serious issues to handle before addressing staking rewards. DCinvestor listed five objections to the proposal, including that ETH issuance is already lower than Bitcoin's and newly mined gold.
