EU Reviews MiCA Regulation Amid Stablecoin Regulatory Challenges
The European Union has started reviewing its Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation to address issues facing offshore stablecoin issuers. The review comes after the European Commission considered changes to the MiCA framework, which has been criticized for creating a regulatory gap that leaves European users unprotected or blocks transactions.
Patrick Hansen, Circle's EU policy head, previously stated that the current MiCA regime has major problems that need to be addressed. He noted that it leaves European users vulnerable and restricts transactions due to licensing requirements.
The review is also influenced by recent policy shifts in the US, which have promoted the stablecoin market through laws like the GENIUS Act. The EU aims to reflect recent technological developments, such as the tokenization of deposits and payment instruments, during the review process.
