FalconX Slashes Workforce Amid Crypto Market Downturn
FalconX, one of the largest digital asset prime brokers in the industry, has cut roughly 10% of its global workforce as the crypto market slump drags on longer than many expected.
The layoffs, which amount to around 35 employees, come at a delicate moment for a firm that spent much of last year expanding. The cuts are also part of a broader trend in the industry, with several other major players including Coinbase and Crypto.com having made similar reductions recently.
FalconX is reshaping its regional strategy amid these layoffs, withdrawing its license application with the Monetary Authority of Singapore and pivoting towards crypto derivatives trading while expanding its business in Europe. This shift reflects a broader trend in the industry, as exchanges adapt to market downturns by diversifying beyond traditional spot trading.
The company's decision to lay off employees was influenced by the steep drop in Bitcoin's price, which has fallen about 50% from its October peak near $126,000 to below $64,000. This decline has reduced trading volumes and retail activity, putting pressure on firms like FalconX that rely heavily on spot trading for revenue.
