Farage Accused of Backing Russian Disinformation Efforts

Alastair Campbell has written in his diary about Nigel Farage's reaction to the government's announcement of a new National Centre for Information Defence. The centre aims to detect, attribute and disrupt hostile state information attacks and support UK democracy.

The prime minister revealed that Russia spends around £1.3bn each year on manipulating information, including using bots, fake websites, and forged branding of British organisations, such as universities and the BBC.

Nigel Farage claimed that this new initiative was to embarrass him, specifically mentioning his party's plans to use cryptocurrency gains to fund propaganda efforts. He argued that Russia should be free to spread lies and disinformation with the goal of weakening UK society and democracy.

Campbell notes that it is 'weird' to see Farage defending the Russian right to lie, especially considering the Kremlin's significant investment in information manipulation.
