FBI Counterintelligence Agent Arrested for Stealing $1 Million in Cryptocurrency

A former FBI counterintelligence agent has been arrested and charged with stealing nearly $1 million in cryptocurrency from digital wallets under investigation. Patrick Steven Yaroch, a veteran of the agency's Counterintelligence and Espionage Division, allegedly used his access to move the funds into an account he controlled.

Yaroch was part of the division that handles foreign threats and protects US national security. The investigation involved cryptocurrency wallets linked to what court documents describe as an 'adversarial nation,' with some reports suggesting connections to Russia.

A search of his home uncovered over $925,000 in cryptocurrency, a hardware wallet, handwritten recovery phrases, and paperwork related to moving abroad. Investigators also found conversations on Yaroch's phone with the AI chatbot ChatGPT, which included questions about what to do with $1 million.
