The FBI has officially linked the massive $6.3 billion cryptocurrency theft from Binance to North Korean hackers. This heist, the largest of its kind, occurred on Thursday when hackers exploited a vulnerability involving a Binance engineer's laptop to execute unauthorized withdrawals. The FBI identified the hacker group as TraderTraitor, a subset of the notorious Lazarus Group, which operates under North Korean military intelligence.

Despite the scale of the theft, crypto firms managed to freeze over 40% of the stolen assets, preventing the hackers from cashing them out. Ari Redbord, head of global policy for TRM Labs, noted that while the hack was unprecedented, the industry's rapid response mitigated some of the damage. 'We had the largest hack, largest theft in human history,' Redbord said, adding that North Korea will now attempt to launder the remaining assets.

North Korea has increasingly relied on cyber operations to generate foreign currency, with cyber theft now accounting for about half of its foreign earnings. These funds are critical for financing weapons of mass destruction and evading international sanctions. South Korea's spy agency estimates that North Korea has over 8,400 trained cyber warfare agents, with thousands more in support roles.

The country's cyber units are involved in various activities, from psychological warfare to ransomware attacks, and even hiring remote IT workers at foreign companies. North Korea's focus on cyber operations stems from their cost-effectiveness, covert nature, and versatility in advancing the state's strategic goals.
