Fed Hawkishness Delays Bitcoin Breakout
The Federal Reserve's hawkish stance is delaying the potential for a meaningful breakout in Bitcoin. The central bank's decision to remove expected easing through 2027 from its dot plot has supported the US dollar and short-dated yields, pushing back liquidity conditions that have driven Bitcoin's price.
With inflation remaining too high and policymakers characterizing the economy and labor market as strong, a further rate hike this year looks increasingly plausible. The Iran conflict continues to contribute to higher energy prices, adding to inflationary pressures and making it less likely for the Fed to soften its stance.
The CLARITY Act's setback has also limited the prospect of a meaningful breakout in Bitcoin. While the legislation still retains bipartisan relevance due to its importance for stablecoins, its failure this year is not expected to push its passage out to 2030. A revised version may return early next year.
However, the bond market offers an upside route for investors. Treasury yields are already historically high, and the Treasury's limited purchases have done little to pull down the long end. Higher political uncertainty and higher yields build pressure for a more aggressive response from the Fed, which could become a powerful catalyst for both gold and Bitcoin in an extreme scenario.
