Fed Holds Interest Rate Steady Amid Dissent from Regional Presidents

The Federal Reserve maintained its key interest rate at a range between 3.5% and 3.75%, despite growing calls for an increase from some officials.

The FOMC voted 9-3 to hold the federal funds rate steady, with three regional presidents - Beth Hammack of Cleveland, Neel Kashkari of Minneapolis, and Lorie Logan of Dallas - dissenting in favor of a quarter-percentage-point hike.

The dissenters argued that higher rates were needed to address inflation, which has been above the Fed's 2% target for more than five years.

Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh has been criticized for providing unclear signals on monetary policy, but he has also expressed disdain for the Fed's past practice of providing forward guidance on its expectations for rates.
