Five Cryptocurrencies Buck the Trend with Gains While Bitcoin and Ethereum Plummet
In a crypto market where major coins like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and XRP (XRP) have seen significant declines over the past year, five cryptocurrencies have bucked the trend and posted gains. Zcash (ZEC), Hyperliquid (HYPE), Monero (XMR), NEAR Protocol (NEAR), and Uniswap (UNI) have all risen in value, with Zcash leading the pack with an 800% increase to $1,344. This stands in stark contrast to the performance of Bitcoin, which has fallen about 30% to $85,896, and Ethereum, which has dropped 40% to $2,704.
Zcash’s impressive gain, while notable, hides the more modest increases of the other four coins. Monero, another privacy-focused cryptocurrency, has risen around 66% to $558, while Hyperliquid, which facilitates futures trading, has appreciated roughly 90% to $93. NEAR Protocol and Uniswap have seen gains of 63% and 9%, respectively, but all five coins still trade below their previous all-time highs.
Despite their recent success, these five cryptocurrencies share little beyond their outperformance of the major coins. Zcash stands out as an extreme case, while the others have more modest gains. The privacy coins, Zcash and Monero, appear to share a common theme, but the small sample size makes it difficult to establish a solid trend. NEAR Protocol’s growth challenges the idea that specialized coins are outperforming broader market trends, as it competes directly with Ethereum and Solana, which have both seen significant declines.
The ongoing performance of these privacy-focused coins will be key in determining whether their recent success signals a lasting trend or merely a temporary shift in capital. If Zcash and Monero continue to thrive while major coins recover, privacy features could gain lasting traction. However, if they fall back with Bitcoin and XRP, it may simply indicate that these five coins had a good year without signaling a definitive trend.
