FOP Endorses Revised CLARITY Act Amid Ongoing Crypto Regulation Debate
The National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), representing over 382,000 active and retired officers in the United States, has endorsed the revised Digital Asset Market Clarity Act after lawmakers addressed concerns about cryptocurrency-related prosecutions.
The FOP's reversal comes after its initial opposition to the bill, which it had warned could restrict prosecutors pursuing financial crimes involving cryptocurrency. However, revisions clarified that protections for certain noncontrolling software developers and decentralized technologies would not curtail investigations or prosecutions.
The endorsement is a significant development in the ongoing debate over cryptocurrency regulation, with other law enforcement groups also weighing in on the issue. The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) had previously endorsed the legislation, while Major County Sheriffs of America withdrew its opposition after discussions with lawmakers.
The revised bill includes provisions that would protect digital asset companies and stablecoin issuers from liability when they delay suspicious transactions or act at law enforcement's request. The bill also addresses crypto ATM fraud and applies Bank Secrecy Act obligations to covered digital commodity exchanges, brokers, and dealers.
