Former NCA Officer Ordered to Repay £1.8 Million in Stolen Bitcoin

A former National Crime Agency (NCA) officer has been ordered to repay more than £1.8 million after stealing cryptocurrency from an investigation into a dark web marketplace.

Paul Chowles, 44, was jailed for five years and six months in 2025 for theft and money laundering.

He stole 50 Bitcoin seized during the Silk Road 2.0 investigation, but only 30 were recovered.

The total value of the stolen cryptocurrency has increased significantly due to its increasing value, resulting in a confiscation order against Chowles for £1,810,678.93.
