Fragile Bitcoin Price Hangs in Balance as ETF Exits Weigh on Market
Bitcoin's recent price surge to $86,000 is fragile due to massive ETF capital exits and high leverage in the market. According to Glassnode, exchange spot taker flow turned from net selling to net buying as volume increased, indicating genuine spot participation. This shift was accompanied by a rise in on-chain activity, with realized capitalization values exceeding its high band.
The rebound has been largely driven by short-covering, but the market's demand quality has improved. However, futures open interest, funding, and realized profit-taking are all above Glassnode's bands, indicating a potential vulnerability. If spot participation falters, the price could become increasingly dependent on leveraged traders.
The ETF net flow was negative $300 million, highlighting an uneven recovery in demand. Deribit's Bitcoin options expiry on September 25 may create a volatility window, but its impact is uncertain. The market's durability will be tested beyond this event.
