Gazprom and Crypto Energy Launch Modular Data Center at Siberian Gas Field
Russian state-owned gas company Gazprom has partnered with cryptocurrency firm Crypto Energy to launch a pilot project that will power a modular data center at a gas field in Siberia. The project, located in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug region, will utilize natural gas from the depleted Medvezhye gas field.
The modular data center will be constructed by Crypto Energy and powered directly by a gas piston power plant, with Gazprom providing low-pressure gas to the facility. This initiative comes after Russia banned Bitcoin mining in Moscow and surrounding regions due to concerns over the strain on the country's power grid.
The ban has had little impact on cryptocurrency mining in Siberia and eastern territories, where energy costs are significantly cheaper. The project is seen as an opportunity for Gazprom to provide spare power generation capacity at fields for data centers in Russian regions.
