Gemini Space Station Shares Plunge 80% as Regulatory Licenses Fuel Acquisition Talk
Gemini Space Station (GEMI) shares have plummeted by an alarming 80% since its listing, sending shockwaves throughout the crypto market. The company's market capitalization has shrunk to around $753 million from a peak of approximately $4 billion.
The decline in GEMI's fortunes is mirrored by a significant deterioration in its business metrics. Second-quarter exchange revenue dropped 38% year-over-year to $12.5 million, while spot trading volume fell by a staggering 66% to $3.8 billion. Assets on the platform have also declined sharply, plummeting from $18.2 billion to $8.4 billion.
The regulatory licenses and approvals held through Gemini subsidiaries are viewed as key assets for potential buyers. One venture capital investor noted that acquiring Gemini could be a more efficient route than obtaining these approvals directly, given the time and legal costs involved.
