Germany Surpasses UK in Cryptocurrency Adoption
Germany is leading Europe in cryptocurrency adoption, with its younger investors and wealth channels driving participation in digital assets. The country's head start on regulation has given it a significant advantage over other European nations.
CoinShares researcher Luke Nolan notes that the UK lags behind Germany due to slower regulatory progress. While the UK's Financial Conduct Authority lifted its ban on crypto exchange-traded products just under a year ago, it has yet to catch up with Germany in terms of adoption and institutional expansion.
Germany has a strong position in the European Union's crypto licensing framework, with 89 licensed service providers, representing 25.5% of ESMA's MiCA register. The country also leads the bloc by MiCA authorization, with 57 authorized crypto companies as of June this year.
Large German banks are also making strides in the sector, with Deutsche Bank awaiting regulatory approval to launch crypto custody solutions for institutional clients in Europe. Landesbank Baden-Württemberg has already partnered with Bitpanda to offer crypto custody services through its institutional custody platform.
