Ghana's Crypto Market Hits $21B, Regulators Scramble to Keep Pace
Ghana's cryptocurrency market has reached an estimated $21 billion in annual transactions, making it the fifth-largest in sub-Saharan Africa. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), between 8% and 17% of Ghanaians have bought or sold crypto assets.
The growth is driven by stablecoins, which are becoming increasingly popular for trading, inflation hedging, and informal cross-border settlement. The IMF notes that while Ghana's regulatory framework has made progress in creating the legal and supervisory structure, it still faces challenges in licensing a market of its size.
To address these challenges, regulators are using sandboxes to test 20 crypto firms, including Yellow Card Ghana, WhiteBIT Ghana, and Hyro Exchange. The SEC is gathering information during this phase to finalize activity-specific licensing requirements.
