Global Crypto ATM Numbers Plummet to 2021 Levels Amid Regulatory Crackdown
The global number of cryptocurrency ATMs has dropped to levels not seen since 2021. According to data from Coin ATM Radar, there are currently 27,358 machines worldwide, down from 28,945 in July. The U.S. accounted for 476 of the removals, although it still commands 71.4% of the world's crypto ATMs.
Since July 8, 587 machines have been removed, with a majority taken out in September. A total of 35 states have enacted legislation related to crypto ATMs and kiosks since 2023, with some outright banning them due to concerns over fraud and scams.
Despite the losses, the U.S. remains the leading region for crypto ATMs, followed by Canada and Oceania. Critics argue that the crackdown on ATMs represents regulatory overreach, penalizing legitimate users and inhibiting innovation.
