Google Blends Android and ChromeOS in New AI-Powered Laptop Platform

Google has merged Android and ChromeOS into a new operating system called Googlebook. The company announced the platform on May 12, 2026, at "The Android Show: I/O Edition." This move marks the end of the line between the two operating systems.

The first Googlebook devices will be available for pre-order on September 21, 2026, with hardware from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Google is targeting the premium market with metal builds, high-resolution displays, and silicon from Intel, MediaTek, and Qualcomm.

Googlebook runs on Gemini Intelligence, the company's AI framework. The system features an AI-driven cursor called Magic Pointer, which adapts to context and enhances user interaction with on-screen elements. Additionally, users can seamlessly cast their Android phone apps and files directly onto the Googlebook display without cables or setup processes.

Google has committed to delivering ChromeOS updates through at least 2034 for existing models. The company plans to use ChromeOS for educational markets where cost and simplicity are still important.
