Recently, there has been a growing interest in finding ways to monetize old computer hardware and gaming PCs. The answer came sooner than expected: the artificial intelligence (AI) craze transformed the GPU market, sparking the concept of renting out GPUs.

This 'GPU rental' model allows AI researchers, developers, and startups to access computing power without investing in expensive servers or cloud services like AWS or Google Cloud. Instead, they can rent capacity from independent providers on decentralized networks and platforms.

Imagine an Airbnb for hardware: instead of building a server park or paying for expensive cloud services, AI enthusiasts can now rent out their GPUs to users who need computing power for tasks such as training AI models, running large language models (LLMs), or 3D rendering.

The market has two pioneers: Nosana and Render Network. Both are built on the Solana blockchain, offering fast and low-cost transactions. Nosana focuses on AI and LLMs, using high-end consumer GPUs like the Nvidia RTX 3090 and 4090. It offers capacity at a fraction of the usual cost to developers, while providing automatic, task-based payments in its native NOS token.

Render Network, on the other hand, started as a film industry and animation 3D graphics renderer, but has since expanded to include generative visual AI and video creation. It uses a more rigorous performance measurement process (RNDR Bench) to categorize connected hardware, ensuring professional studios receive stable quality.

In this new landscape, the VRAM (video memory) capacity of GPUs becomes crucial. Large language models require significant memory, making 24 GB or higher VRAM essential for efficient processing. Nvidia's RTX 3090 and 4090 are top choices due to their high VRAM capacity.

Can you make money from GPU rental in Hungary? It seems more viable than cryptocurrency mining, but the Hungarian market has its own characteristics. The going rate for renting an RTX 3090 or 4090 on platforms like Nosana is around $0.25-$0.50 per hour (82-164 HUF), resulting in daily revenues of approximately $3-6 (1100-2200 HUF) per card.

However, electricity costs are a significant concern, especially with rezsicsökkentett (reduced rate) prices above 70 FtokWh. For an RTX 4090 running at full capacity, total system power consumption can reach 450-500W, resulting in daily energy bills of around 750-850 HUF. This means 35-50% of the profit goes towards electricity costs.

Fortunately, high-speed optical internet (FTTH) is relatively inexpensive and widely available in most Hungarian cities, providing a significant competitive advantage over Western European or American markets with slower connection speeds.
