Graphics Settings: A Tool for Managing Hardware Load
Lowering graphics settings can improve gaming performance, but only when the GPU is the actual performance limit. Resolution, shadows, and anti-aliasing tend to have the largest impact on frame rate. However, simply switching everything to Low doesn't fix problems, as it only masks them.
The CPU handles logic, AI, and physics, while the GPU renders visuals. If the GPU is overloaded, cutting back on visual settings lightens its workload, resulting in smoother, steadier frame rates. The key is not to blindly lower graphics settings, but rather to identify what's causing the slowdown and address it accordingly.
Resolution has the greatest impact on performance, with fewer pixels resulting in less work per frame. Dropping from 1440p to 1080p can produce a meaningful FPS improvement when the GPU is already under pressure. Shadows are also expensive in games with complex real-time lighting, and reducing their quality can deliver a solid performance gain.
