Sequoia Capital's chart of Hacker News hype over two decades reveals that founders should neither blindly chase trends nor dismiss them as noise. The highlighted categories included web development, cloud infrastructure, programming languages, cryptocurrency, social media, Apple, artificial intelligence, geopolitics, and the 'Musk-verse.'
The chart is not an econometric proof but an insightful visualization of how hype can be a useful radar system for developer behavior. It shows that important technological movements often begin appearing in specialist communities five or six years before they become mainstream.
