Hackers Hijack Microsoft's Verified X Account to Promote Fake Clippy Token
A massive hack on Microsoft's X account led to a fake Clippy token being pushed to its 13 million followers, sparking concerns about the vulnerability of verified accounts.
The attackers took control of the account for approximately 30 minutes and used it to promote the $Clippy token, claiming it had a liquidity pool paired with Microsoft's stock ticker, $MSFT. The token's promoters claimed a liquidity pool valued at over $200,000, but this was never true.
MICROSOFT CONFIRMED THE BREACH DIRECTLY, stating that the account 'has been secured and the unauthorized posts have been removed.'
The hack raises concerns about the ease with which attackers can hijack verified accounts, attaching a token to it and leveraging its reputation to promote fake assets.
