Hana Bank Breaks Ground with $100M Blockchain Bond Settlement

Share

Hana Bank has made history in the financial industry by issuing a $100 million foreign-currency digital bond on Euroclear's blockchain, achieving same-day settlement for the first time. This milestone transaction demonstrates the power of distributed ledger technology (DLT) in streamlining traditional bond markets.

The standard bond settlement cycle typically takes between three to five business days, resulting in a period of counterparty risk where capital is essentially frozen. However, by leveraging Euroclear's Digital Financial Market Infrastructure platform, known as D-FMI, Hana Bank was able to complete the entire process, issuance, registration, allocation, and fund transfer, on the same day.

The five-year maturity bond was structured under a standard Global Medium Term Note program and attracted investors using existing Euroclear accounts with no additional onboarding procedures required. This seamless integration highlights the potential of D-FMI to facilitate faster and more efficient transactions in the digital bond market.
